Instructions

  • Gather all the required ingredients and equipment.
  • The next step is to create a basic syrup.
  • Take a cup of sugar and one cup of water and pour them into a saucepan.
  • Stir for a few minutes as you let the mixture boil.
  • After reaching boiling point, reduce the stove’s heat and allow it to simmer.
  • During this period, the mixture will thicken and reduce in quantity.
  • In the next step, add peppermint extract to the mixture. Do this while stirring.
  • Let it simmer for a minute, then place it away from heat.
  • You can let it cool or instead refrigerate it for faster results.
  • When it has cooled, pour it into a jar or desired storage package.
  • You can now serve as desired.

Notes

  • While making the basic simple syrup, ensure you use filtered water. Use filtered water over tap water. Tap water may affect the quality of your peppermint syrup. There are impurities in tap water that affect the flavor of peppermint syrup. Once you use filtered water, you will notice a significant change in flavor.
  • While making the syrup, ensure it does not burn. If it burns, it will have a negative effect on the syrup’s flavor. Instead, start over and be mindful of the stove’s temperatures.
  • You can choose other storage package options other than a jar. A plastic squeeze bottle is a good pick. It will be easier to get content out of the bottle. While in the kitchen, efficiency is key.
  • If you have a sweet tooth, consider adding the amount of sugar while making the syrup. The same applies if you want less sugar; reduce the amount of sugar in your syrup. You can also do away with sugar to achieve sugar-free peppermint syrup.
  • Add your peppermint syrup to both hot and cold drinks.
  • Besides drinks, the syrup can be used as an ingredient while making pastries like cakes.
