I love Starbucks and, by extension, its fans, who always come up with amazing concoctions for which the label “secret menu items” has stuck. The other day, I came across and fell in love with the Banana Chocolate Chip Frappuccino. The problem is, as a student, I am on a budget, so I set out to find the best recipe for an at-home version. Now that I finally got one that I like, I want to share it with you, but before I get to that, let’s first go through some facts about the Banana Chocolate Chip Frappuccino so that you appreciate the recipe more.

What’s in a Banana Chocolate Chip Frappuccino (ingredients)?

Ingredients

What’s actually in the banana chocolate chip frappuccino? According to Barista HQ, the beverage has one banana and is a regular Vanilla Bean Crème Frappuccino with java chips topped with whipped cream. According to Starbucks, this crème frappuccino consists of milk, ice, crème Frappuccino syrup, vanilla syrup, and vanilla bean powder.

  • Milk: which you can purchase from the local dairy. I prefer 2 %milk over whole milk for the lower fat content.
  • Crème Frappuccino syrup: for the homemade version, I make simple syrup by simmering sugar in water until it dissolves and turns golden, then blending it with xanthan gum powder and vanilla extract.
  • Vanilla syrup: you can also make this syrup by starting with simple syrup, then blending in store-bought pure vanilla extract.
  • Vanilla Bean Powder: I make this easily by baking high-quality Vanilla beans in a fan force oven for one hour at 212°F to dry them, then milling them to powder.
  • Java chips: surprisingly, Starbucks java chips have no coffee but are made of confectionery sugar, chocolate mass, cocoa, cookie crumbs, and salt. You can use store-bought mini-chocolate chips instead of java chips.
  •  Whipped cream: you can buy it from your local store. I like the aerosol can for the foam effect when topping.

With 64 grams of sugar, it exceeds the 50 grams of daily sugar intake recommended for adults in just one grande cup. This is why this secret menu item is considered one of Starbucks’ high-calorie drinks at Starbucks, and you should only have it as an occasional treat.
