How much does Starbucks pay its employees in India?
As a rule of thumb, well-compensated employees are satisfied employees. By extension, satisfied employees offer better services to their customers. Starbucks seems to operate using this model as their salaries for their employees in India show. From my research, each employee is paid varying salaries depending on their job. The table below shows the job titles and the estimated salary paid.

Comparatively, Baristas working for Starbucks in India are not the best paid. This is because some of the top competitors in India pay better monthly salaries as shown in the table below. This might change over time as Starbucks continues to gain a bigger share in India’s coffee market and continues to prove its dominance as one of the best coffee providers and equally, one of the best employers.

Is there a Starbucks drive-thru in India?
Yes, there is a Starbucks drive-thru in India. The first drive-thru store was opened in 2020. It was opened in Dhillon Plaza, Ambala Chandigarh expressway. It was the first and to date remains the only drive-thru store. During its opening ceremony, the company committed to opening many more similar stores but none has been opened to date. From the drive-thru, customers enjoy a similarly wide range of menu items like all the other stores in different locations. There are some sits in this store for those clients who would like to take a brief break before they can continue on their journey. While in the store, there is free Wi-Fi, and other Starbucks merchandise is availed to clients for purchase.
It is critical to note that one of the main reasons there are not many drive-thru outlets in India is that their infrastructure has not been built in a way to accommodate them. 100 years since the culture of fast food was anchored in India, there are only 100 drive-thrus in the whole country. This is a testament that though efforts have been made by other companies, there is still a great deal of work that needs to be done to achieve the full potential of this business opportunity. Starbucks is expected to play a critical role in spearheading this move of ensuring there are more drive-thru outlets in the country.

Starbucks delivery in India
What are the delivery options for Starbucks in India?
Starbucks in India offers delivery using their main delivery partner Swiggy. Swiggy is a company that offers pick-up and delivery of food items in India. It was started in 2014 and has grown over the years to be the partner of choice for ordering foods and drinks across different outlets in India. Swiggy and Starbucks got into a partnership in 2020 after the hit of the Covid-19 pandemic. Since then, one can order their favorite Starbucks Menu item in the comfort of their home or office. It is important to note that this option is only available in select cities around India. These include New Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. For other cities, there is no option for delivery yet, but as the company grows, Starbucks is likely to introduce delivery in more cities.
In September 2020, Starbucks also launched a Starbucks India mobile application. Using this application, one can order their favorite beverage beforehand and pick it up in the nearest store. Though this application does not offer delivery services, it helps reduce the long wait in the queue in a Starbucks store. One just places the order beforehand, customizes it to their desire online, and picks it in their chosen store.
What are the payment options while ordering Starbucks for delivery in India?
At every Starbucks store in India, the primary mode of payment is using cash. They however offer options to pay for your order using debit and credit cards. This is to ensure that one does not have to carry cash into the store. It has especially become popular after the Covid-19 pandemic when most people were discouraged from carrying cash.
The Starbucks India Mobile application also offers an option for customers to pay for their orders. This option is enabled by linking your debit or credit card to your mobile application. When making orders online, one checks out using the credit card details, where the money is deducted from before the order is delivered. This is used as a safety precaution to prevent orders that have not been paid for being delivered and those who ordered not claiming them. Such activities would be a loss both for the company and the riders.
One can also pay for their Starbucks offer using mobile money services. Airtel is a mobile network operator and in 2017, they got into partnerships with several banks in India to allow those who use Airtel to access mobile money services. Unlike credit cards, cash, and other conventional banking facilities, mobile money is more convenient as one can easily use it on demand. As such, whether in a Starbucks shop, through online orders, or through the home and office deliveries, one can make payment for their order using mobile money.
Orders that are processed by Swiggy can be paid both in cash and on delivery, or they can also be paid using credit cards. Swiggy also has an option of connecting one’s credit or debit card to their app making it easier to make payments online before the order is delivered at home or in the office.
The final payment option available for Starbucks clients in India is the use of their registered Starbucks Card. This card is issued at any Starbucks store upon request. You can add money to this card using the mobile app and you can use it to make payments in any store as well as online when using the Starbucks India Mobile application. Using the registered Starbucks card earns your points which when you accumulate over time, you can use to make payments.
What is the market share of Starbucks in India?
Starbucks operates in India with a partnership deal with the company Tata Consumer Products Limited. This 50:50 partnership has seen the launch of 268 stores across the country in a span of 10 years. This marks it as one of the fastest-growing markets in India. In India, there are a total of 6,200 coffee shops. This means that Starbucks’ market share in terms of quantity is 4.3%. If they keep their acceleration high, they are likely to become the biggest coffee house in India. Currently, Café Coffee Day has the highest number of outlets with 572 outlets across the country which represents 9.2% of the market share.
One key contribution to the rapid growth of Starbucks in India is its offering of extra services other than coffee. One such extra service is the week-long experience called the Starbucks coffee festival. This festival comes with promotions where different varieties of coffee from across the world are showcased. Coffee lovers are treated to stories about the finest coffee around the world and brewing techniques that show the best taste in coffee. This is followed by coffee tasting sessions and trivia along with things showcased. As a result, the culture of coffee lovers is growing by the day in India.
