I got the Starbucks Deku Frappuccino some weeks ago, and I was smitten; the tastiest thing I have had in a while. I’m not a fan of anime, but this delicacy is tempting me.

Brief History of the drink

The Starbucks Deku Frappuccino is an intriguing name that makes you want to know more. So, where did it originate? The green-colored beverage is named after Izuku Midoriya, also referred to by his hero name Deku, a character from My Hero Academia created by Kohei Horikoshi. Izuku is the main protagonist of the manga series and lives in a world where everyone possesses powers except him.

He dreams of becoming a superhero and is eventually recruited by All Might, the world’s best hero, then enrolls in a school for professional heroes. The Japanese anime series is an inspirational show dedicated to audiences to help them reach their plus-ultra potential that has garnered awards at Crunchyroll’s Anime Awards. The drink makes you feel powerful, like rising from the ashes like a phoenix. It was created alongside the Strawberry Shortcake, inspired by Shoto Todoroki from the same show.

Is Starbucks Deku Frappuccino still available at Starbucks?

Yes, the Starbucks Deku Frappuccino is available anytime during operating hours. However, you will need to know its recipe to order it since it is not on the menu. This secret menu drink is also available in all Starbucks sizes.

What makes this marvelous drink so delicious? It consists of a couple of ingredients, including a Matcha Green Tea Frappuccino, Vanilla syrup, then topped off with some mocha drizzle, whipped cream, and matcha powder.

  • Matcha Green Tea Frappuccino: It is made from ground Japanese green tea and is the base for the bright green color of the Starbucks Deku Frappuccino, just like Deku’s hair.
  • Vanilla syrup: Use this instead of the classic syrup. Add 3 pumps for a venti, 2 for a Grande, and 1 for a tall.
  • Extra mocha drizzle: It is lined into the cup before adding the matcha green tea.
  • Whipped cream and matcha powder to top off this scrumptious beverage.

What sizes are available?

The Starbucks Deku Frappuccino is available in three sizes, tall (12 ounces), Grande (16 ounces), and venti (20 ounces). If you are trying it for the first time, it is best to start with a tall one, which is also my preferred size. Even I will admit that the sugar can be overwhelming, so start small and then progress gradually.

Nutritional facts

If you are looking for a healthy drink, Starbucks may not be the place to find it, especially if it isn’t vegan or the ingredients aren’t adjusted to that effect. Starbucks beverages are known for their intense sugar and high calories, and the Deku Frappuccino is no different. Matcha is an excellent antioxidant that may reduce the risk of heart disease, boost metabolism, and lower blood pressure. Still, as a Frappuccino, these benefits are overshadowed by the sugar overload. It is advisable to take it in moderation, especially for those with underlying medical conditions or on a diet. The drink contains 430 calories in a tall, 570 in a Grande, and 680 in a venti.

Looking at a Grande, the calories are contributed mainly by the sugar and carbohydrates at 26% of the daily intake requirements. The fats are at 40%, majorly from milk and whipped cream. The cholesterol and sodium levels are also significant, at 90 and 250mg, respectively.

The Starbucks Deku Frappuccino might not be the healthiest option to take. It can be alleviated by swapping the milk for a non-fat or plant-based option like almond, coconut, or oat milk. You can skip the whipped cream to reduce sugar and fat and the syrup pumps.

Caffeine information

The Starbucks Deku Frappuccino contains caffeine, with 50mg in a tall, 70mg in a Grande, and 95mg in a venti. I love that the caffeine is not high, just enough for some stimulation and refreshment, but also safe, given that 400mg a day is considered benign for most adults. Enjoy your cup of the Starbucks Deku Frappuccino for some shots of energy.

So, what does Starbucks Deku Frappuccino taste like?

Delightful! The matcha green tea blends impeccably with the vanilla syrup for a sweet, flavorful taste. The mocha drizzle adds to the sweetness making the beverage so appetizing, especially if you have a sweet tooth.

Equipment

  • Blender
  • Sifter
  • Whisk
  • Saucepan

Ingredients

  • ½ teaspoon of Matcha green tea
  • ½ cup of hot water
  • 1½ cups of milk
  • 3 pumps of vanilla syrup
  • ½ cup white sugar
  • ½ cup of brewed coffee
  • ½ cup of cocoa powder
  • 1 cup of ice cubes

Instructions

  • Prepare the matcha green tea. Sift it into a bowl to prevent clumping, then add hot water. Whisk from side to side, either in a zigzag motion or back and forth, to evenly spread the powder into the water and create a foamy layer at the top. If whisked in a circular motion, the tea will not foam.
  • Add in the milk and whisk until foamy.
  • Pour the matcha green tea into a blender, add vanilla syrup and ice cubes, and blend.
  • To make the mocha drizzle, combine the brewed coffee, cocoa powder, and sugar in a saucepan on medium heat, constantly stirring.
  • Allow the mixture to cool, then drizzle it into a cup.
  • Pour in the blended matcha green tea.
  • Top off with whipped cream and some matcha powder.

Notes

  • If you don’t like milk, you can add more hot water instead of milk. For a vegan beverage, you can also use your preferred milk, from low-fat milk to plant-based, including coconut, almond, oat, or soy milk.
  • Prefer a hot drink? Steam the milk and forego the ice cubes for a hot cup of deliciousness.
  • I love matcha, but it can be a bit bitter, so you can add a sweetener like honey or maple syrup to your liking. Remember that all matcha is not the same depending on the brand, with some being pricier with a mellow flavor while others are less pricy and bitterer.
  • For a healthier drink, you can skip the whipped cream for less sugar and fat and reduce the syrup pumps and drizzle.
  • You can add extra toppings, syrups, or sprinkles for a more flavorful beverage.
